War history enthusiasts will get a rare
opportunity this summer to take part in the biggest military
vehicle show ever held in Windsor and Essex County.
Featuring more than 60 war-time vehicles, the
Military Muster will be among the spring and summer offerings of
classic car shows.
"History is marketable," says Mike
Timoshyk, a key organizer of the event to be held Aug. 14-15 at
the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village.
"People want to know what happened. For the general public,
rarely do you see military vehicles. You see all kinds of '57
Chevys and Hot Rods, but there's so few military vehicle
collectors around that it's unusual to see them.
"Windsor happens to be fortunate that
there's two or three nuts like me in town," he laughs.
An owner of four military vehicles, Timoshyk
spent 32 years with the Canadian Forces until he retired in
2006, moved to Windsor and began restoring military vehicles.
"I've been a military collector since I
was 13 when I received my grandfather's First World War medals.
That tweaked me into military history."
Mickey Moulder, museum volunteer
vice-chairman, asked Timoshyk to organize a two-day event in the
wake of the public's response to a one-day display held last
year at the facility.
"The public loved it," says
Timoshyk. "We arranged for some veterans to come down and
the vets appreciated seeing the old vehicles again."
This year's show will features vehicles
spanning the First World War and the Korean and Vietnam
campaigns. It will display jeeps, trucks, ambulances, tanks and
armoured personnel carriers.
Although it has yet to be confirmed, Timoshyk
also hopes to include vehicles used by the Canadian military in
Afghanistan.
His vehicles, which include a 1942 Ford 1,500
15 CWT (1,500 weight) truck built in Windsor and a 1952 Willy's
Jeep, will be on display.
The event will also feature a re-enactment of
the War of 1812 and a First World War trench, complete with
sandbags and barbed wire.
